Caring for someone with Alzheimer's at home can be rewarding but also overwhelming. Adult Day Centers offer families an option that can supplement care at home. Adult Day Centers provide structured support for loved ones with Alzheimer's disease and much-needed respite for caregivers.

These programs help individuals with Alzheimer's or other types of dementia stay socially engaged, physically active, and emotionally supported in a safe, supervised setting.

There are two program models for Adult Day Centers in New Jersey:

  • The Social Model focuses on social and recreational activities during the day. Some health monitoring may be provided.
  • The Medical Model includes everything in the Social Model plus on-site nursing staff. This model of adult day is required to be licensed by the NJ Department of Health.

Adult Day Centers vary in the programming provided. Some may offer specialized programs for individuals with dementia.

Before enrolling in any program, schedule a tour or ask about trial visits (half or full day) so you and your loved one can get a feel for the environment.

Questions to Ask:

  • What are the center's hours and days of operation?
  • Is transportation available?
  • What is the cost? Are financial assistance programs available?
  • What is the staff-to-participant ratio?
  • What are staff credentials and languages spoken?
  • What activities does the center provide?
  • Is specialized training in dementia provided to staff? What level of experience do staff have working with people with memory loss?
  • What safety protocols are in place for wandering?

What to Look For?

  • Is the environment clean, safe, and welcoming?
  • Are participants engaged and supported by attentive staff?
  • How did your loved one respond to a trial visit? What did staff observe?

Many families are surprised at how well their loved one adjusts—and even thrives—in an adult day setting. Keep in mind that it might take a few weeks to settle in, but with patience and staff partnership the transition can be smooth and positive.
