Defining moments have lasting importance – they shape who we are and guide what comes next. As we begin 2026, we want to pause and acknowledge one such defining moment in the history of Alzheimer’s New Jersey®.
Ten years ago, we changed our name from the Alzheimer’s Association, Greater New Jersey Chapter to Alzheimer’s New Jersey®. Our goal was clear: to preserve our vital focus as an independent New Jersey not-for-profit organization, meeting the needs of New Jersey families facing Alzheimer’s disease by directing our donor and volunteer resources to the growing needs in our own state – 100%.
Our Board of Directors decided to end our affiliation with the Alzheimer’s Association in response to an Alzheimer’s Association decision to combine all independent chapters into one national corporation. Leaving the Alzheimer’s Association was a difficult decision, but we knew then as we do now, New Jersey’s 600,000 people affected by Alzheimer’s disease need a local organization exclusively dedicated to them with the authority to make local decisions in response to local community needs.
Our name, Alzheimer’s New Jersey®—reflects that unwavering commitment.
No longer being part of the Alzheimer’s Association has had some challenges, but we are proud of what we have accomplished over the past ten years under our new name. With the support of our Board of Directors, donors, and volunteers, Alzheimer’s New Jersey® has served thousands of New Jersey families across the state through programs offering unwavering support, education and advocacy. We are focused on the day-to-day lives of those living with Alzheimer’s disease and those who care for them. Our mission is local.
As we look ahead in the coming year, Alzheimer’s New Jersey® will continue to be the place caregivers and families can turn to for help. We are working to deepen the impact of what we do, building connections and a caring supportive community so the growing number of New Jersey families facing Alzheimer’s have the resources and support they need to best manage care for their loved ones and have the best days possible.
