Support Group Facilitator Training

Support groups provide a forum for family members and caregivers of people with Alzheimer's disease to share feelings, concerns and information, and to support each other in coping with the effects of Alzheimer's disease. This training seminar is designed for professionals who want to become facilitators for Alzheimer caregiver support groups. The program focuses on the fundamentals of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, community and Association resources, and specific concerns in Alzheimer caregiver groups. In addition, group dynamics and management, facilitator roles and responsibilities and support group development and promotion ideas will be discussed.

Activity Based Alzheimer's Care (ABAC)

ABAC suggests that activities are the foundation of care. Every event, encounter or exchange is an activity. The scope of activities includes every interaction with staff members, volunteers, relatives and other individuals; not only scheduled events provided by activity staff. This training seminar is for activity professionals who have a basic understanding of Alzheimer's disease and whose primary job responsibilities include activity programming, design and implementation.

Foundations of Dementia Care: Learning to Lead

Foundations of Dementia Care: Learning to Lead provides tools for creating an environment of learning that will reinforce lessons learned in the classroom. The goal is to enhance the supervisory skills of supervisors, charge nurses and other managers while building the dementia care team and addressing issues of quality dementia care. The module also includes three one-hour sessions: Leading the Team, From Classroom to Practice and Building a Vision.

Clinical Trials

An overview is provided of clinical trials, including the differences between their various phases and their impact on the treatment, prevention, and diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. Issues for caregivers and individuals with dementia to consider, such as benefits, risks, informed consent, and expectations of participation, will be addressed. The session also will provide a brief overview of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias, as well as the programs and services offered by the Alzheimer's Association.


Timeslips

The TimeSlips creative storytelling method helps people with Alzheimer's disease tap their imaginations to express their dreams, fears and longings. By suspending the expectations to remember, these storytelling workshops invite people with Alzheimer's disease to hone what communication skills they retain.
